PROJECT III: Light

The goal for this project is to understand the use of light. The use of light is very important for a space. It can effect the space in making it seem bigger then it actually is or even make it seem smaller then it really is.

Assignment

You have been selected to design a proposed non-denominational chapel located on the campus of Farmingdale State College. The College wants this to be a profoundly spiritual place that people of all faiths can worship and reflect on life’s events. The College believes this can be achieved by the creative use of light. A site hasn't yet been selected on campus; the College is looking for guidance from the Architect. The building should be integrated into the fabric of the campus. The College explicitly requests the design not be symmetrical.

Contextual Analysis

Site Location

I chose this area for my chapel because I felt it should be between the campus center and the dorms on campus. I believe the majority of the people who will be going to the chapel are students who dorm.so my placement I feel is ideal because it is on the way for students going back to the dorms from anywhere on campus. Also visible from the campus center for those who are eating or on break from class and want to go into the chapel.

Narrative

Farmingdale State College wants to build a chapel based on light. Each chapel will catch most of the light from one direction. The main chapel will be the most important room of the building therefore it will catch light from the south and a little from west and east, the memorial chapel and the meditation chapel will catch light from the west and a little of the south. The office part of the building doesn't need to have a system to catch light.

#1

#2

I ended up choosing #1 to keep working on. I feel it fits the site better so the chapels get better lighting from the sun. My second conceptual wouldn't fit the site the right way because of where the sun rises and sets.
