PROJECT I: Form & Function

This project is based around the concept that form follows function. The aim of the project is to develop a pedestrian bridge that can open/close to allow a boat (30' x 40') to pass through. My concept is to change a cantilever bridge to allow the opening needed with a pulley system.

I chose 3 different bridge types to modify; an arch, a cantilever and a cable stay bridge.

The 3 mechanisms I chose will be incorporated into the bridges to make the bridge open. I chose a wine bottle opener, a wrench and a pulley.

Preliminary Designs

After sketching a few different ideas I chose 2 of those and further developed them. For my 2 preliminary sketches I chose the cantilever with a pulley system and the arch with a pulley system as well. I will be further developing design 1 of the 2 preliminary's.
